Expertise, Vigilance et Neutrality

The judo referee plays a crucial role in ensuring that competitions run smoothly. Positioned at the heart of the action, referees oversee the application of the rules, the safety of the fighters, and the respect for the fundamental values of judo: respect, control, and fair play. On the tatami, they carefully observe every movement to evaluate techniques and award points that determine the outcome of the match.

Referees communicate through codified gestures and announce their decisions loudly in Japanese. They are also responsible for intervening quickly in case of danger, such as stopping a match if a competitor is at risk.

Referees must demonstrate vigilance, neutrality, and an in-depth knowledge of the rules, which evolve regularly.

Refereeing Structure in a Judo Match is having one referee is on the tatami, directly observing the fight and making the official calls while two additional referees sit at the table on the edge of the tatami, providing their input and confirming decisions with the main referee.

In case of uncertainty, video analysis may be used to clarify a decision, as all matches are recorded.

This system ensures fairness and accuracy in judging each competition, maintaining the spirit and integrity of judo.
